A day in the life
Name: Mike Otter
Job title: Business Manager
Division: RK Accountancy
RK Accountancy office: Altrincham
1. What do you enjoy most about your role at RK Accountancy?
I really enjoy meeting clients & candidates and building relationships. As Business Manager I often encounter situations where clients may have previously received a poor service from an agency and I appreciate having the opportunity to work with them, listen to their views and hopefully encourage a more positive view of recruiters.
I work in a great team and enjoy the daily buzz as we help each other to find the best solutions for our clients. Every day is different, even after ten years I still fell challenged and am constantly learning.
2. What attracted you to working for RK Accountancy?
I really liked what RK Accountancy wanted to achieve! When I went for an Assessment Day and Interview in 1999 it was clear how passionate and driven everyone was to grow the business and increase RK's presence in the market place, whilst ensuring an excellent level of service to candidates and clients alike. I wanted to be part of such an ambitious business.
3. What is your career history?
I worked for 7 and a half years at an Architects in Macclesfield whilst studying for an ONC & HNC in Building Construction. I then went on to study further for a degree in Building Surveying & Conservation, before spending a year travelling around Australia, Tasmania & Japan. I loved every minute of it especially my time working with the public, I knew from this experience that I wanted a career where I would be constantly challenged and would meet lots of different people.
I joined RK Accountancy in 1999 and since then have recruited permanent staff at all levels: clerical, part qualified and qualified accountants, winning 'Permanent Consultant of the Year' for three consecutive years.
4. How would you describe the training and support you received when you began your career at RK Accountancy?
I found that the training and support I received when I first joined outstanding! Everyone seemed to have time for me and I owe so much to the patience of the Managers who helped me in answering the million & one questions I had.
I am now happy to pass on my knowledge and experience to new RK members, as I realise the importance and value of learning from your colleagues. RK has always been willing to support staff training and individual development goals.
5. Please describe a 'typical' day at RK Accountancy
My step by step day involves:
- Morning meeting to discuss team focus & targets, and develop a structured plan for the week
- Follow up job adverts/ Lead chase calls
- Client development calls
- Client visits and presentations
- Referencing candidates
- Producing e-shots for candidates & clients and staying in touch
- Registering candidates
- Candidate service calls
- Planning for tomorrow
6. How would you describe the RK Accountancy culture?
The company is structured, friendly, positive & supportive. There is a willingness to learn and develop, coupled with an openness of all colleagues to listen to each others opinions and offer advice.
I am one of a number of people who have been with RK Accountancy for over 10 years. I believe that one of RK Accountancy's great strengths is that it encourages development for everyone hence its great staff retention.
Everyone at RK understands the company vision and is made to feel part of it. We're all kept informed regularly of our position in relation to our goals, and twice a year we have a big company get together to recognise achievements and focus on areas for us to develop. I have been fortunate enough to win numerous prises over the years, including a week in Puerto Banus, a weekend at the Grosvenor Hotel & Spa and a long weekend in Paris.
